Beim Streamen von Musik müsst ihr immer einen Kompromiss zwischen Datenverbrauch und Musikqualität eingehen. Je besser die Qualität des Klangs, desto höher der Datenverbrauch. So kostet der gleiche Titel im HE-AAC Codec etwa 1,5 Megabyte, bei normaler Qualität 6 Megabyte, im Lossless-Format 36 Megabyte und verlustfrei sogar 145 Megabyte. Was beim Streamen über eine WLAN-Verbindung vielleicht irrelevant erscheint, spielt beim Streamen von unterwegs über das mobile Datennetzwerk eine größere Rolle. Auch beim Download von Songs solltet ihr dann auf euren Speicherplatz schauen.

Sowohl über Apple Music als auch bei Spotify streamt ihr Musik effizient mit wenig Datenverbrauch im HE-AAC-Format mit bis zu 64 Kilobit pro Sekunde (kbit/s). Für normale bis Lossless-Qualität setzen beide auf den AAC-Codec (Advanced Audio Coding) – Apple standardmäßig auf 256 kbit/s, Spotify verwendet 128 kbit/s oder 256 kbit/s und zusätzlich noch das Ogg/Vorbis-Format mit bis zu 320 kbit/s. In der Praxis sind die Unterschiede gering. Hier ist eher eine dritte Qualitätsstufe spannend: verlustfreies Audio, oder auf Englisch „lossless“.

Diese bietet bisher nur Apple Music. Seit 2021 bietet der Anbieter auf seiner Streaming-Plattform Songs im verlustfreien Apple-Lossless-Audio-Codec, kurz ALAC. Ob die Soundqualität maximal ist, hängt aber von euren Ausgabegeräten ab. Bluetooth-Kopfhörer wie AirPods oder Beats-Kopfhörer unterstützen die verlustfreie Wiedergabe über ALAC nicht. Einzige Möglichkeit für den verlustfreien Audio-Genuss ist eine kabelgebundene Verbindung zu Kopfhörern, Receivern oder Aktivlautsprechern. Für Lossless entwickelte drahtlose Formate wie aptX-HD unterstützt Apple derzeit noch nicht.

Was unternehmen die beiden Anbieter, um Bestandskunden zu halten und neue Kunden dazuzugewinnen? Was können die Nutzer erwarten in Sachen Angebot, Soundqualität, Extras und natürlich Kosten?

Lead: Der Markt für Musik-Streaming-Dienste boomt. Das zeigen die Zahlen, die kürzlich das Wirtschaftsforschungsinstitut MIDiA Research für 2021 veröffentlicht hat. Demnach ist bis Ende des zweiten Quartals 2021 die Abonnenten-Zahl von Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music und Co. im Vergleich zu 2020 von 414,4 Millionen auf 523,9 Millionen gestiegen. Ein Zuwachs von satten 26,4 Prozent, was den Trend der Vorjahre in etwa bestätigt. Klarer Marktführer ist – wie immer, möchte man sagen –, Spotify mit 32 Prozent. Apple Music belegt Platz zwei mit 15 Prozent, erst dann folgen Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Deezer etc.

Warum ist Apple Music so teuer?

Aktuell gibt es vier verschiedene Abo-Modelle mit monatlichen Kosten von 5,99 Euro bis 16,99 Euro. Der Umfang der Musik-Bibliothek ist bei allen Optionen gleich. Anders als bei Spotify oder Amazon Prime Music gibt es abgesehen vom Probe-Abo keine Möglichkeit, Apple Music dauerhaft kostenlos zu nutzen. Für die meisten Nutzer kostet Apple Music im Monat 9,99 Euro. Wer den Dienst in einer Familie mit mehreren Leuten teilen möchte, kommt auf einen Gesamtpreis von 14,99 Euro.
