Wasserdicht ist etwas, das keine Flüssigkeiten oder Gase durchlässt. In der Uhrenindustrie wird die Wasserdichtigkeit einer Uhr durch ihre Druckfestigkeit definiert. Die Hersteller geben den Grad der Wasserdichtigkeit meist in Metern (m), Fuß (ft) oder Atmosphären (ATM) an. "ATM" ist die Abkürzung für "normale Atmosphäre". Die Aufschrift ATM bezieht sich also auf die Atmosphäre und wird in einem physikalischen Prozess berechnet, bei dem der Druck ermittelt wird, dem die Uhr standhalten kann. Das heißt, der Druck, den das Wasser auf die Uhr ausüben kann. ATM ist eine Druckeinheit, die die Wasserdichtigkeit einer Uhr angibt. Uhren mit der Bezeichnung "wasserdicht", mit oder ohne Angabe des Überdrucks, müssen den Anforderungen entsprechen und die vorgesehenen Tests bestanden haben. Beachten Sie, dass sich die geschriebene Zahl nicht auf die Tiefe bezieht, sondern auf Einheiten, die gerade zur Berechnung der Wasserdichtigkeit Ihrer Uhr verwendet werden. 

• Wenn Ihre Uhr keine Angaben zur Wasserdichtigkeit aufweist: In diesem Fall halten Sie sie systematisch von Wasserbereichen fern: Das bedeutet, dass Ihre Uhr absolut nicht wasserdicht ist. Sie könnten Ihre Uhr und ihren Mechanismus beschädigen.

• 3 ATM : Eine Uhr mit der Kennzeichnung 3ATM bedeutet, dass Ihre Uhr wasserdicht ist, wenn sie leicht mit Wasser in Berührung kommt, z. B. beim Händewaschen oder wenn es regnet. Ihre Uhr verträgt gelegentliche Spritzer wie beim Händewaschen oder bei Regen. Wir empfehlen daher, sie während des Duschens oder Schwimmens abzunehmen, da sie sonst beschädigt werden könnte.

• 5 ATM : Dies ist eine leicht wasserdichte Uhr. Die 5 ATM-Wasserdichtigkeit ermöglicht es Ihrer Uhr, dem Eintauchen in Wasser zu widerstehen, sodass Sie sie zum Schwimmen verwenden können. Wenn Sie jedoch schwimmen gehen wollen, achten Sie darauf, dass es ruhig ist, und vermeiden Sie Sprünge und Tauchgänge! Eine 5ATM-Uhr hält keine Aktivitäten aus, bei denen die Uhr einem Überdruck ausgesetzt wird. Außerdem sollten Sie nicht mit Ihrer wasserdichten Uhr duschen oder baden, da Kondenswasser Ihre Uhr beschädigen und eine beschlagene Wolke unter dem Glas Ihrer Uhr hinterlassen kann. 

• 10 ATM : Eine Wasserdichtigkeit von 10ATM bedeutet, dass eine wasserdichte Uhr widerstandsfähiger ist. Dank dieser Wasserdichtigkeit können Sie lange Zeit schwimmen gehen, ohne dass Ihr Zifferblatt beschlägt. Mit einer wasserdichten Uhr mit 10ATM können Sie Sportschwimmen und vernünftig tauchen, ohne Angst haben zu müssen, Ihre Uhr zu beschädigen.

• 30 ATM : Uhren ab einer Wasserdichtigkeit von 30ATM und mehr sind vollständig wasserdichte Uhren. Diese Uhren, die oft nur von Profis getragen werden, sind widerstandsfähig gegen das Tauchen mit Flaschen in tiefen Gewässern. Mit dieser Art von Uhr können Sie tauchen, schwimmen und Wassersport betreiben, ohne Angst haben zu müssen, dass Ihre Uhr beschädigt wird. Taucheruhren sind meist bis zu 300 m wasserdicht.  

Wie wasserdicht sollte eine Uhr sein?

Unternehmen unterscheiden bei ihren Uhren strikt zwischen Modellen, die laut Hersteller lediglich wasserabweisend, wasserfest oder spritzwassergeschützt sind, also mit Spritzwasser und Schweiß problemlos zurechtkommen, und jenen, die tatsächlich über einen längeren Zeitraum einer bestimmten Menge Wasser, beziehungsweise dem Druck unter Wasser unbeschadet standhalten können. Doch auch eine einst als „wasserdicht“ bezeichnete Uhr kann im Laufe der Zeit Abnutzungserscheinungen aufweisen, was zu einer verminderten Dichtigkeit des verwendeten Materials führen kann.

5 ATM bedeutet bei einer Uhr, dass diese einem Druck von 5 bar bzw. dem Druck einer Wassersäule von 50 Metern standhält. In der Praxis entspricht das dem Druck eines fließenden Wasserstrahls beim Händewaschen, Duschen oder Baden. 5 ATM bedeutet also nicht, dass eine Uhr bis zu einer Tauchtiefe von 50 Meter wasserdicht ist, sondern dass sie dem Druck einer Wassersäule von 50 Metern standhält.

Beim Schwimmen können durch die Schwimmbewegungen Druckspitzen entstehen, die höher als 5 bar sind. Aufgrund dieser Druckspitzen eignen sich deshalb zum Schwimmen nur solche Uhren, die die Bezeichnung 10 ATM oder höher tragen.

Wann ist eine Uhr wirklich wasserdicht?

Da die Wasserdichtigkeit von Uhren immer wieder zu Missverständnissen und damit zur falschen Anwendung führt, geben wir Ihnen an dieser Stelle einen groben Überblick darüber, wie viel Wasserkontakt Sie Ihrer Uhr gemäß den Herstellerangaben zumuten können. Die Angaben der Wasserdichtigkeit auf einer Uhr können von Metern über Bar bis hin zu ATM reichen.

Dabei ist zu wissen, dass 1ATM = 1,01325 Bar entspricht und 1 Bar 10 Metern. So bedeutet beispielsweise die Angabe 5 bar, dass die Wasserdichtigkeit der Uhr auf eine angenommene Wassersäule von 50 Metern auf einem Quadratzentimeter geprüft wurde. Allerdings können zum Beispiel Schwimmbewegungen oder ein Schlag auf das Wasser den dynamischen Druck auf einzelne Bereiche der Uhr gegenüber dem statischen Druck weit übersteigen und somit die angegebene Wasserdiche übersteigen. Demzufolge bedeutet die Angabe 30m wasserdicht nicht, dass Sie mit einer solchen Uhr bis zu 30 Meter tief tauchen können, sondern lediglich, dass diese Uhr einem Druck von maximal 3 Bar standhalten würde. Die Wasserdichtheit einer Uhr sollte regelmäßig überprüft werden, damit Ihre Uhr normal gebraucht werden kann. Kann man mit einer 3 ATM Uhr Schwimmen?

Die Eigenschaft der Wasserdichte bei Uhren wird mit ATM angegeben. Dieser entspricht dem Wasserdruck in der Einheit Bar.

• Somit bedeutet 1 ATM das gleiche wie 1 Bar Wasserdruck.
• Bei 3 Bar oder 3 ATM ist die Uhr geschützt vor Wasserspritzer. Der Kontakt mit Wasser sollte allerdings vermieden werden.
• Ab 5 Bar / 5 ATM ist die Uhr vor Schweiß geschützt. Duschen ist ab dem Wert auch problemlos möglich.
• Bei 10 Bar / 10 ATM hält die Uhr auch Regen, Schwimmen und sogar Schnorcheln aus.
• Tauchen können Sie mit Ihrer Uhr aber erst ab 20 Bar / 20 ATM.
• Achten Sie jedoch darauf, dass die angegebenen Werte nur Richtwerte darstellen und deshalb Schäden auch eventuell davor stattfinden könnten.
